Biography

Peter Davidson has worked in the transportation planning field for over 27 years, starting his career as an Engineer at Main Roads Queensland, then joining a private consultancy before forming his own company in 1993. He has had broad experience with transport modelling, and has worked on all stages of transport model development; from data collection and software design through to option testing and evaluation. He has been the primary developer of a number of major four-step models and other analytical tools. Six years ago he started the development of the 4S model which has already been used for over $8b of investment decisions, including bid advice for post-construction sales of Clem 7 and Queensland Motorways, and business case assessment of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing. Recently he has focused on understanding the impacts of autonomous vehicles, and has assisted Queensland's Transport and Main Roads in developing policies for their adoption.

Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract

The Transport and Main Roads Departments Transport Policy Branch has commissioned ground breaking modelling to analyse the likely impacts of autonomous vehicles on Queensland’s transport network and people’s travel behaviour. Peter will talk about the findings of this work in detail. The modelling is believed to be among the first of its kind in the world to assess the congestion impacts for different scenarios for the take up of autonomous vehicles and ride sharing technologies. The modelling provides a tool for developing the policy settings required to enable Queensland to position itself to effectively respond to the challenges posed by the emergence of autonomous vehicle technology.
