TECH TOURS & WORKSHOP

This year at the SEQ/SWQ Branch Conference, delegates can participate Tech Tour 1, Tech Tour 2, or the Roads Management Workshop, which will be held concurrently on the first day of the Conference.

Tech Tour 1 - Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant

MT KYNOCH WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Mt Kynoch is a 65ML/day water treatment plant supplying water to over 165,000 residents. A major $35M upgrade has recently been completed. This is the first major upgrade of the site since the early 2000s and includes renewal of key infrastructure, the addition of a PAC inlet tank and UV disinfection system, modernisation of electrical and control systems, and upgrades of key dosing, pumping and treatment systems. The upgrades have set up Mt Kynoch for the future growth of the Toowoomba region.

Tech Tour 2 - East Creek Detention Basins

BALLIN DRIVE CHANNEL AND DETENTION BASIN

Ballin Drive detention basin was constructed on East Creek as part of the Gowrie Creek Flood Mitigation Program which aimed to improve flood immunity through Toowoomba's CBD. Since the Basin's opening in 2015, the channel works associated with this project have undergone significant erosion and degradation following a number of relatively minor storm events. A series of rectification works have recently been completed to help stabilise the channel and to reinstate landscaping components that have been significantly damaged.

GOWRIE CREEK FLOOD MITIGATION PROGRAM (GARNET LEHMANN DETENTION BASIN)

Garnet Lehmann Park detention basin was constructed on East Creek as part of the Gowrie Creek Flood Mitigation Program in response to significant floods in 2011.  The program aimed to improve flood immunity through Toowoomba’s CBD with a key element of these works being the use of upstream catchment detention.  One of 2 large detention basins constructed in the catchment for flood mitigation, the Garnet Lehmann basin is a 67Ml structure constructed within the East Creek waterway parklands.  Although controversial during design and construction due to its location within the parklands, this project has resulted in the successful integration of structural flood mitigation works with natural waterway rehabilitation, increased biodiversity and active and passive recreational uses.

Road Management Workshop - Hosted by SHEPHERD

This interactive workshop will be facilitated by SHEPHERD and is designed to encourage discussion and shared learnings on using modern techniques and smart technology to better manage road networks on limited budgets.

Your Road Management colleagues in the South East and South West will share their experiences on how to do more with less by using new technology to assist with Unsealed Roads Management and using artificial intelligence to manage Sealed Road Networks.

The session will end with a Panel Discussion with representatives from Toowoomba, Western Downs, Maranoa and Gympie regional councils answering your burning questions and sharing their invaluable insights.
