TECH TOURS & roads foruM

This year at the SEQ/SWQ Branch Conference, delegates can participate Tech Tour 1, Tech Tour 2, or the Roads Forum, which will be held concurrently on the first day of the Conference.

Tech Tour 1 - 2022 Flood Recovery Sites

Table Top Landslip Flood Remediation Works

Kearney Street Chute Flood Remediation Works

Hosted by Toowoomba Regional Council

In late 2021 and 2022, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) experienced a number of significant rain events, resulting in three declared flooding events that substantially impacted the community and the road network across our region.

TRC conducted a rigorous damage assessment process which quickly saw the 2022 Flood Recovery Program grow to be the largest program Council has ever delivered.

Join us as we share our learnings, challenges and successes.

Table Top Landslip Flood Remediation Works

During the 2021 – 2022 Flood Events across the Toowoomba Region, a landslip occurred on the Table Top Drive eastern escarpment compromising the integrity of the embankment directly adjacent to the road.

The batter stabilisation project focussed on addressing the instability along Table Top Drive, including reshaping the adjacent bank on the high side of the road to reduce the surcharge, anchoring the slip below the road with 9m long passive dowels, and securing the area with shotcrete to protect against future erosion or slips. Additionally, the storm water surface drainage was re-directed to avoid scouring of the downstream batter. These important works required specialised machinery to traverse the steep embankment without further disturbance or impacts around the landslip site.

These remediation works were part of the 2022 Flood Recovery Program which contributed to the correction of various landslip locations across the Toowoomba region. The QRA approved value for this project was circa $1.38 million.

Kearney Street Chute Flood Remediation Works

The Kearney Street Chute remediation project addresses 1,800m2 of deep scouring which was caused by high volumes of storm waters upstream during the 2022 Flood event. These critical works include 3,500m3 of fill, 360m3 of reinforced rock filled gabion baskets, and 2,400m3 of D50 600 rock which will control flow and mitigate future erosion, ensuring the stability and long-term sustainability of the chute.

In addition, Toowoomba Regional Council employed the use of Moorooka trucks to enable importation of material down the steep decent of the chute embankment. This project is crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of erosion and safeguarding the surrounding infrastructure and residential property from further damage.

These remediation works were part of the 2022 Flood Recovery Betterment Program, the QRA approved value for this project was $2.2 million.
