About the Trail

The BVRT, a 157km long, off-road recreational trail is finished, with the final 27km recently completed by Somerset Regional Council. It is the longest trail in Australia and follows the disused Brisbane Valley rail corridor.  Walkers, cyclists and horse riders can now experience the diverse rural landscape and breath-taking Brisbane Valley. The project is more than a successful engineering outcome - it has recycled a dormant rail corridor into an iconic, unique recreational trail that is attracting visitors and businesses to the Somerset region.

The BVRT winds its way up the Brisbane Valley, traversing farmland, forests, picturesque rural settings and country towns.  Being on the old railway line, the BVRT provides an off-road climb up the valley for day trippers, overnight camping or longer term adventures, but some sections can be more challenging.

Where is the Trail

The BVRT officially starts at Wulkuraka Station in Ipswich and then continues to Fernvale, before looping westwards to Lowood and then continuing north to Coominya, Esk, Toogoolawah, Moore, Linville, Benarkin, and Blackbutt before finally arriving in Yarraman. Or you can do it the other way around.

What kind of bicycle is most suitable?

Cyclists ride the BVRT on all types of bicycle, but some sections can be quite challenging. MTBs and cyclocross bikes are recommended. The BVRT is definitely unsuitable for light-weight racing bicycles. E-bikes are permitted and are a great way to enjoy the rail trail.
