What a great few days at the IPWEA Queensland (IPWEAQ) Public Works Professionals Orientation session last week! Having spent 6 years working “business to business” in the private sector before transitioning to a “business to Government” role 2 years ago with Proterra Group, this orientation session provided great insight into the ins and outs of the Public Works sector.

The highlight of the two-day, information packed seminar was definitely the visit to Brisbane Airport’s New Runway facilitated by Brisbane Airport Corporation. Did you know that the new runway is estimated to lead to the creation of 7,800 new jobs and contribute an additional $5 Billion in annual economic benefit to the region by the year 2035? The team from Toowoomba Regional Council and I were lucky to snap the first pic of an aircraft taking off just behind us! So cool!

Graduate Engineer, Proterra

As an Undergraduate Civil engineering student, I learned a lot about the Public Works Sector, governance and the roles of the government play a major role in our local infrastructure as well as the issues and challenges facing the industry.

I enjoyed the presentations on site strategies (the Human Factor) and understanding RPEQ, both presentations gave a great insight into their respective subject which will help in my civil engineering career. I thoroughly enjoyed the site visit to the new Brisbane Airport runway.
